Six sides and a zip, cut to the depth of the mattress rather than stretched over it.
An encasement closes. You put the mattress inside, you run the zip round three sides, and after that nothing is getting in or out through the fabric. That is why the covers in this department are the ones that answer a bed bug problem, and why the federal guidance quoted in our guide talks about covers that seal rather than covers that cover.
Depth matters more here than anywhere else on the site. A fitted protector forgives two inches of error because the skirt stretches. A zip does not forgive: order a nine-inch cover for a fourteen-inch mattress and it will not close. Every encasement page prints the depth band it was cut for, and the ladder on this page runs up to 9 in, 6-9 in, 9-12 in, up to 15 in, 12-15 in, up to 18 in and 15-18 in.
Once it is zipped, you can leave it for months. Plan on wrestling the mattress once, and then forgetting about it.

SafeRest makes bedding barriers in two shapes. SafeRest fitted mattress protectors go on like a fitted sheet and take the spill. SafeRest zippered encasements zip closed on all six sides and seal. Between them we cover 9 bed sizes and 50 products.
Working through a problem rather than a product? Our guide to five sides or six sets the two shapes side by side with the federal wording on covers that seal. The SafeRest guide to depth and fit explains why a zip that will not close is a measuring error rather than a manufacturing one, and the dust mite guide covers the washing half of the job.
The rest of the bed matters too: SafeRest pillow protectors for the item that touches a face all night, SafeRest box spring encasements for the hollow wooden base underneath, and SafeRest padded protectors where a mattress has gone hard and needs some loft back.
