The cover goes on before the problem arrives

You wash the sheets and you turn the pillow. Underneath both of them the mattress takes everything: sweat on a hot night, a mug of tea at seven in the morning, a child who did not make it to the bathroom, a dog who was never supposed to be up there.

SafeRest started in 2010 with one cover in one size, made because the founder's own mattress had been ruined twice in three years. The range has grown to 50 covers since then. The idea behind it has not moved: put the barrier on first, and the mattress underneath stays the mattress you paid for.

The SafeRest workshop began in 2010 in a spare room, with one product: a fitted, five-sided cover in queen. Two ruined mattresses in three years had made the case for it. The first run went to friends, and the note that came back was always about the same thing, which was noise. Early waterproof covers crackled. You could hear yourself roll over.

That complaint set the direction for everything after. A barrier that works and sounds like a carrier bag gets taken off within a month, and a cover in the cupboard protects nothing. So the membrane went thinner, the face fabric went to cotton terry, and the test stopped being a laboratory question and became a domestic one: can you hear it at two in the morning.

We still run that test the same way. A new sample sleeps in one of our own beds for a month before it goes anywhere near the range. It gets slept on by someone who runs hot, someone who reads late, and at least one child. It goes through the wash six times. If the elastic has given up by the sixth, the sample does not come back.

The range grew by request rather than by plan. People who had bought a protector wrote to ask what to do about the pillows, so the pillow covers came next.

People dealing with an infestation wrote to say a five-sided cover was the wrong tool, and they were right. The zippered encasements followed, cut to depth bands rather than sold as one stretchy size. Someone whose bed sat on an old wooden base pointed out that the base was the part the exterminator wanted covered, and the box spring encasements came out of that conversation.

Today the SafeRest lineup runs to 50 covers across 9 bed sizes, from $13.99 for a crib cover to $107.99 for a bundle that does the mattress and both pillows at once. 29 of them are fitted and five-sided. 21 zip closed on all six. We keep both because they answer different problems, and a shop that sells you the wrong one has not done you a favour.

What SafeRest will not do is pretend a cover is more than it is. Waterproof is a claim about a backing layer, and we use the word the way the maker of the laminate uses it: liquid on the face does not reach the mattress. It says nothing about a spill that runs off the edge, and nothing about humidity.

Where public health guidance answers a question better than we can, we quote that guidance word for word, link to it, and print the date we read it. The bed bug page and the asthma page behind two of our guides both come from federal agencies, and both say more in one sentence than a paragraph of ours would.

The other half of the job is fit. More returns happen over depth than over anything else, because a fourteen-inch mattress with a three-inch topper is a seventeen-inch bed, and a nine-to-twelve encasement will not close around it. Every page on this site prints the size and, where the cover is zippered, the depth band. Measure the mattress with the topper on, and then read the band.

Everything else is ordinary. The SafeRest team writes these pages, updates the prices on a schedule, and answers the address in the footer. The order itself happens with our retail partner, and payment, delivery and returns belong to them.
